The Sulfaro Stocktake Sale continues. Make sure you visit our showrooms at 650-652 Whitehorse Rd Mitcham to secure your selection. This week let’s take a look at the trends reflected through two major European Furniture Expos – The IMM Cologne show and the Salone del Mobile Milano event, on which we have already reported..

The Lawrence Sofa and Chairs

Let’s start with Cologne and trends in living room design. It’s colour, colour and more colour – a veritable explosion of vibrant hues through all the various trade halls of this famous annual European furniture fair. Sofas, armchairs, occasional chairs and dining chairs were all presented in a wide range of strong living colours, and at this event extended to the tables and lighting. It’s almost exotic, it’s expressive and it’s individual.

It’s often the world of high fashion that defines the direction and tone of the choices made to dress furniture. One bright exuberant piece of furniture can lift a whole room.

Bright and sunny yellows as well as pastel yellows captured the eye continually whilst touring the exhibition halls in Cologne. Designers added accessories in burnt orange, combined with sideboard pads in lush grass green. Greens of all hues were featured by many designers. Pantone – the colour standard – had selected a bright living yellow green as its colour of the year for 2017. This year 2018 the colour selected is Ultra Violet.

The salons of Vienna at the turn of the 20th Century inspired a trend many see continuing into 2018-19 – a combination of deep pine green, Bordeaux red, mustard yellow and royal blue.

Dark woods, brass (replacing copper) with rich satin gold – the brass being brushed, and velvets – all creating a sumptuous splendour in interior design.

At Sulfaro, you have the choice of selecting from our range, choosing your fabrics and selecting colours. We offer a wide range of accessories – lighting, ornaments and occasional furniture such as coffee tables, credenzas and ottomans in various shapes and heights. You can create your interior vision or get professional advice from our experienced in-house Design team. Sulfaro Furniture – handmade, elegant and stylish. Beautiful crafted furniture. Built on a solid tradition of European craftsmanship over many years.

Sulfaro is a family business established by patriarch Nunzio Sulfaro. Nunzio arrived in Australia in 1960 aboard the ship the ‘Roma’. He had been sponsored by a well known Australian Furniture Manufacturer as a trained, proficient Fine Furniture maker and Upholsterer. His skills were and still are unique. Nunzio was driven. He wanted to create his own furniture and demonstrate his unique style to the Australian market – right here in Melbourne. After several jobs for larger companies, he commenced making chairs in a spare room at his home. In a short time he had transferred to a small factory in Coburg. Over the next 50 years there were many expansions and today Sulfaro has its manufacturing and showrooms located at 650-652 Whitehorse Rd in Mitcham, opening back in 1989. Nunzio has passed on that same standard of European Craftsmanship, Artisanship and know how to all who work on and create Sulfaro Furniture. His son Santo ensures that the same quality, finishing, design and comfort result in the stunning Sulfaro Furniture on offer today.

Move Over Minimalism – The Decor Trend You Never Saw Coming Is Here

Louis Dining Suite

Interior Design has been trending towards the Minimalist look for several years now. Until now that is. In the US and Britain as well as in Italy and other parts of Europe there is a strong move trending to a far more lived in look, a maximalist look if you like. People are embracing a new trend that celebrates their lives and reflects this through their artwork, wallpaper, ornaments, furniture and fabric, both the decorative and the purposeful.

Indoor plants and floral decoratives are now making a big return. Many people enjoy the living nature of indoor plants or the symbolism of natural settings in their living spaces decoratively.

Here is an article reprinted from My Domaine in its Decor section. My Domaine is a US publication from Los Angeles.

Move Over, Minimalism — the Décor Trend You Never Saw Coming Is Here

Increasingly minimal interiors have been dominating décor trend reports for a while now, but as we all know, the pendulum always has to swing back the other way at some point. We started seeing a glimpse of this shift in aesthetics on NYFW’s A/W 17 runways and predicted interiors would follow suit. In the last month, this sentiment has only been confirmed with the proliferation of ultra-cool traditionalist interiors popping up everywhere.

Have we seen enough of monochrome interiors with minimal styling? Maybe not (we’re still all over the new modern trend), but there’s something to be said about a traditional interior executed in a fresh new way. Just like a good Chanel suit will always look flawless on Anna Wintour, some elements of traditional interiors always add flair to a room. Want to learn the best tricks for decorating a traditional home without making if feel stuffy? Get ahead of the curve and incorporate these timeless décor rules in your own space.

Use One Dominant Colour

move-over-minimalismthe-decor-trend-you-never-saw-coming-is-here-2206923.640x0c

No matter how much of a minimalist you are, it’s hard not to fall in love with the playroom of Marie Claire fashion editor Zanna Roberts Rassi. Her designer’s trick for a traditional interior that also feels fresh and modern: going bold with one colour. The red toile wallpaper mixed with a bold striped Dhurrie in the same hue create a vibrant backdrop for other accessories like a classic burlwood armoire, swing-arm sconces, and tailored slip-covered sofa bed.

Throw in Modern Lighting

move-over-minimalismthe-decor-trend-you-never-saw-coming-is-here-2206925.640x0c

You may have an entirely formal and traditional dining room, but there’s one quick way to make it feel fresh again: Just add a minimal chandelier. This is a great way to refresh your space when you inherited a set of furniture that isn’t necessarily your style or to infuse personality into a space that feels too formal.

Go Entirely Neutral

move-over-minimalismthe-decor-trend-you-never-saw-coming-is-here-2206927.640x0c

If there was one house that had the power to turn anyone into a traditionalist, it would be Mark D. Sikes’s Los Angeles home. His trick for making a classic interior feels bright and fresh: to decorate entirely in shades of white and cream (with a few black accents). This unity in tone allows the shapes of the furniture to shine without looking overpowering.

Mix in Some Modern

move-over-minimalismthe-decor-trend-you-never-saw-coming-is-here-2206929.640x0c

British interior designer Ben Pentreath knows a thing or two about classic interiors, but he always manages to make them feel new and different. In this traditional dining room, he added a clean striped dhurrie as a base and softened the furniture with a modern Saarinen table by Knoll. He then mixed in traditional elements in lush emerald green tones to make them stand out.

Light Up Your Bookcase

move-over-minimalismthe-decor-trend-you-never-saw-coming-is-here-2206931.640x0c

There are a few elements of traditional design that are timeless staples, and for good reason: They work every single time. Case in point: Picture lights above bookcases and artwork always add a sophisticated flair to a space, no matter how traditional or modern.

Don’t Mix and Match

move-over-minimalismthe-decor-trend-you-never-saw-coming-is-here-2206933.640x0c

The quickest way to make your traditional room feel stale is to decorate with only one style. Instead, use your maximalist flair for mixing in elements from different parts of the world and different time periods. Don’t be afraid to mix and match your chairs to blend the lines between modern and traditional.

Decorate With Sculptural Plants

move-over-minimalismthe-decor-trend-you-never-saw-coming-is-here-2206935.640x0c

Amy Stone’s stunning New York prewar apartment is proof that traditional interiors can look young and fresh no matter how classic. Adding in a tall banana-leaf plant and a pair of vintage cantilever rattan chairs softened the look of the more traditional furniture, giving the whole space a laid-back edge.

Salone Del Mobile 2018 – Europe’s Design Epicentre

featured image

The Salone Del Mobile Milano 2018 is probably Europe’s largest furniture and design expo, open both to the Trade and to the public. This year over 434,509 people attended, viewing over 1841 exhibits – with 27% being from countries other than Italy. The feature display – Solene Satellite – attracted 650 designers under 35. It is a show of great innovation, vibrance and style. With visitors from over 186 countries, the show is definitely the epicentre of new directions in both interior design, furniture and future trends.

Milan has long been acknowledged as Europe’s leading city in both fashion and design and it is this European and Italian style and elegance on which Sulfaro Fine Furniture has based its collection and design direction.

Salone Del Milano is truly an international show. First Prize for the show went to an Italian Designer, Stefano Carto Vasconellas for his exhibit – Cucina Leggara (Light Kitchen). Second Prize was awarded to a Croatian design group Tink Things – for their innovative and therapeutic children’s design project. Third Prize was awarded to Japanese Designers Yuri Himato for the display ’Soft Block’ a very conceptual piece based on modular furniture. Awards also went to Finland and Mexico. As you can tell, the show is a genuine fusion of idea and creativity.

New directions from shows and events like the Milan event influence future pathways of design and interior visualisations here in Australia, and in this case the Milan show is definitely a global trendsetter.

The direction as evidenced by the show is leaning back towards maximalist in terms of upholstered furniture and ornaments – comfortable seating with low puffy plump and curved sofas.

A - l-chez-nina3949-c-mattia-iotti teals peaches greens.jpg

Wallpaper is making a very solid return to favour. Milano designers Studio Pepe provided a striking illustration of this direction. Taking a Milanese apartment (circa 1880s), the design team added layers of furniture in terracotta, peach, pink and green – all in perfect balance.

B - Cristina-Celestinos-traveling-salon-puts-Rubelli-on-rails-for-Salon-del-Mobile wallpaper

It’s now time for warm, almost retro colours in Europe. Terracottas, browns, deep pinks, burgundy and teals, with flashes of bright blue and orange. Complimenting these warmer colours there is a return to rich timber grains such as walnut, cherry and other similar retro timbers. Think lush velvets in rich tones of turquoise and ruby.
