The young man stepped down the ship’s walkway and onto the dock. He had arrived. Australia his destination. He had a clear vision of his future. He would create beautiful furniture – it was his passion. Here in Melbourne. It was 1960. The young Nunzio Sulfaro was classically trained in the art of furniture making, he was in fact a Master Craftsman. And yes, he would definitely achieve his dream.
It started simply – a spare bedroom in his brother’s house in Brunswick, a suburb of inner Melbourne. At first he made bedroom chairs. He offered exciting, new designs, the latest from Europe. His furniture soon became known, desirable and sought after.
By 1963 he had moved to a small factory in North Coburg. He had married the love of his life, Francesca, and together they raised their family and expanded their business as his designs, his creations became ever more popular. Showrooms were opened in Brunswick and things moved very quickly, at one stage producing up to 100 sofas a month. But this was not Nunzio’s vision. He wanted to create beautiful, handcrafted, hand finished furniture – the very best. Comfort, design and true luxury the perfect finish.
Today the tradition established continues. Nunzio’s son Santo and his wife Amelia continue the vision of Nunzio and his wife Francesca producing beautiful, handcrafted, classic, upholstered furniture to the same exacting standards first introduced by the late Nunzio Sulfaro all those years ago.
1963 – the Beatles were enjoying their first Chart success, Australians were savouring fine, espresso coffee at Pellegrinis. It was a time of growth, a coming of age. It was the time that welcomed the beauty, the grace and the innovation that is Sulfaro.
