Sustainability at Sulfaro
For Sulfaro sustainability means much more than just another buzz word. For many years now the Sulfaro workshops and studios have utilised sustainable practices – Recycle, Re-use and Reduce.
Fabric and leather offcuts are utilised by local Primary Schools for craft exercises and learning. Local Art Centres also collect leather offcuts and fabric remnants to create items such as clothing, bags and accessories – beautifully handmade leather bags, purses and other individually crafted items. Foam offcuts are returned to the manufacturer, Dunlop, for recycling. Timber offcuts are collected for further use by tradesmen and craft users. Sawdust is recycled with gardeners who then compost it and use it as a mulch or soil additive. Naturally as a responsible company, Sulfaro uses a reputable Waste Removal company to recycle all plastics, cardboard, paper and, where possible, general waste.
Old clothing remains a huge problem both here in Australia and to those countries in Africa and Asia where we export thousands of tonnes of used clothing to be recycled. Only a small proportion of this clothing is ever recycled. The rest goes to landfill. Sulfaro utilise a product made by milled old clothing as an adhesive dampener between the springs and framing on all furniture pieces and is now co-operatively investigating the potential for producing this milled fabric produce (from old clothes) locally.
Used furniture is both bulky and difficult to dispose of. Some councils require separate hard rubbish pick up for old furniture and if accepted as ‘landfill’ the furniture is very difficult to dispose of.
