The prices seem attractive, the furniture looks ‘ok’, but the reality is it’s cheap for a very good reason. All upholstered furniture at these outlets is generally imported from Third World locations such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Materials are selected based entirely on cost. Each Sofa, Armchair or accessory is mass produced and exported to Australia, the US, Canada and Europe. The actual manufacturing process involves several factories creating components, mostly using industrial robotics. The final product is a consolidation of all components. The end product is then sold to a trading company which in turn sells it to high volume, high turnover Australian retailers such as Harvey Norman, A-Mart and those mentioned earlier. 90% of Australian retailers are also consolidators. Buyers travel to Asia and purchase product from various manufacturers. Furniture may come from up to 20 different sources. They do not manufacture, design or finish the products sold. At these stores, the choice of fabrics, colours or accessories is entirely limited. What you see is what you get.
